I am a trainee teacher from a Malaysian Institute of Teacher Education campus. I am one of the students who excelled in practicum. As a sharing, there are some tips that you need to know as a trainee teacher or student educator.
- Master the Basics.
I am a Special Rehabilitation teacher. Therefore, I need to know a lot about a special remedial teacher. However, as trainee teachers, the allotted time is short, and often, special remedial option trainee teachers will not be involved in documentation work. In other words, the remedial teacher is only an assistant who teaches and participates in the guidance teacher’s time in the designated school.
Therefore, the task of a trainee teacher who wants to excel in the practicum only focuses on the daily lesson plan (RPH), teaching aids (BBM), activities in the class, contributions to the school, and weekly journals. Trainee teachers must also prepare a complete file that includes biodata, resume, school information, and assessment curriculum standard documents (DSKP).
As a teacher, RPH needs to be complete and detailed. Trainee teachers should refer less to RPH made by permanent teachers in schools. Ask for a complete RPH example from a lecturer, senior, or website. A complete RPH is mandatory for a trainee teacher. That is because mastery of pedagogy is assessed through mastery of RPH writing. Excellent RPH writing shows that the trainee teacher has a complete plan and is ready to start teaching and learning (PDP) in the classroom.
In order to express the written plan, BBM and activities must be prepared. BBM will be used to help teachers explain, present, illustrate, and achieve the learning objectives that have been set. Activities are divided into three, namely, teaching, reinforcement, and assessment. Often, language subjects have additional activities such as writing or copying notes.
Teaching activities require teaching aids like videos, word cards, or material. Game sets or group activity sheets can assist with reinforcement activities. Meanwhile, assessments, such as worksheets, exercises, and quizzes, can be varied. Assessment should be done individually. Often, quiz activities require documentation such as checklists or score notes to find out and track student learning progress.
- Writing Ideas Based on Subject Content.
If the trainee teacher wants to excel, ensure a notebook or note is prepared to reveal the existing ideas. Also, make sure that the ideas found are more realistic and can be realized by the trainee teacher. For example, the idea needs to be less expensive, using materials that are used or already available at school.
When there is a lack of money, the trainee teacher must reduce ego and optimize creativity. There is no need to worry about the views of regular teachers or fellow trainee teachers as long as creativity can produce a compelling, exciting, and complete learning environment.
Practical, exciting, and complete ideas need to be based on RPH that has been written or planned.
- Mastering the Scoring Rubric.
Often, trainee teachers need to pay more attention to the scoring rubric that the lecturer has given. If the practicum supervisor lecturer does not provide the rubric, ask another fellow trainee teacher or supervisor lecturer, i.e., Refrain from being stingy.
The scoring rubric not only focuses on PDP but comprehensively includes contributions to the school. However, the contribution is only one of the essential things. Some of the contributions are all fuel provided, physical assistance, and energy.
The scoring rubric is complementary to the gaps in the RPH and PDP that have been planned, such as thinking skills, student assessment, and classroom management will be evaluated.
